Sandy Crust, a third grade teacher at Hillside Elementary School on Fort
Lewis, saved her nine-year old student’s life.
Mrs. Crust often awards her students with a piece of candy. During
class, Taylar Lammers, suddenly stood up at the back of the classroom
red-faced and coughing. She was choking on a piece of candy.
Sandy rushed across the room, turned Taylar away from the class and
swiftly performed abdominal thrusts. It took three tries before the
candy came up.
Sandy said “the emotions didn’t hit me until I knew Taylar
was okay.” The entire class cheered and clapped for Mrs.
Crust and Taylar, even though they were all scared. Because
of Sandy’s fast action Taylar was able to take the bus home
that day.
Both Taylar and her parents are very grateful that Mrs.
Crust knew what to do to save her. Sandy credits saving
Taylar’s life to the Red Cross first aid and CPR training
she received several years ago.
