Emergency Communications Plan
|
|
|
|
As Hurricane Ivan is expected to
strike the Florida
sometime this weekend. The American Red Cross
is providing the following suggestions for local residents who have
loved ones who may be impacted.
“People who have
relatives in the hurricane watch and warning areas should contact them
now
to
establish a communications plan,” advised Terri Giles, Emergency
Services Director of the American Red Cross. “Many times, people have
to
evacuate quickly and lose telephone service. As a result, they are
unable to
let loved ones know they are okay.”

The following are tips for establishing your
emergency communications plan:
·
Call family members and friends in
advance
of the hurricane strike to find out what plans they have—ride out the storm,
evacuate, stay with friends, etc. Ask your
family members to call you after the hurricane to
let you know their status. Often times,
disasters affect telephone lines, and it may be easier for them to find a
working phone.
·
If they are leaving home, ask where they
are going and what the phone number is
there and the address.
·
Make sure your family members have your work, home and any other
important phone numbers. Ask them to take
those numbers with them when they leave.
People under stress can forget phone numbers they normally would remember.
|
|
|
·
Tell them they may call you collect since only public phones may be
readily available. ·
Get the phone number and address of their employer.
Even if they are displaced from their home, they often go
to
work or will contact their employer with information on their status. · Get the phone numbers and addresses of your family member’s close friends. These
friends may have heard from your relative and can be contacted if needed.
· Be sure to get the phone numbers of others people your relative may want
contacted after
the hurricane passes. It
will relieve some of the burden from them if you can make some of the phone calls for them.
