Ashfall Safety Precautions

Emergency Communications Plans

The recent eruptions and release of ash from Mount Saint Helens may cause some anxiety or concerns for local residents. During ashfall, the American Red Cross recommends the following precautions:

If you have a respiratory ailment, avoid contact with any amount of ash. Stay indoors until local health officials advise that it is safe to go outside.

Volcanic ash is actually fine, glassy fragments
and particles that can increase the health risk
to children and people with existing respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis,
or emphysema.

It can cause severe injury to breathing passages, the respiratory system, eyes, open wounds, and irritation to skin. If possible, stay away from areas with volcanic ashfall.

·    Change oil, oil filters, and air filters frequently (every 50 to 100 miles in heavy dust,
i.e., less than 50 feet visibility; every 500
to 1,000 miles in light dust).

·    Do not drive without an air filter. If you cannot change the air filter, clean it by blowing
