How You Can Help Local Military Families!
The American Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter needs your help. In order to
provide these critical services to local military families, the Red Cross is
seeking volunteers and financial contributions to sustain our local Red Cross
Service to Armed Forces (SAF) program.
Although the Red Cross is
mandated by its Congressional Charter to provide Service to Armed Forces (SAF),
the Red Cross is not a government agency and does not receive tax dollars or
federal funding to provide these free emergency and referral services to
military families and service members.
You can support this vital Red
Cross program for our local military families by making a financial
contribution or by becoming a volunteer, visit our web site and register for the
next
volunteer orientation at
www.rainier-redcross.org or call your local Red Cross offices:
(253)
474-0400 Pierce County (360) 352-8575 Thurston-Mason Counties (360)
748-4607 Lewis County (360) 249-2341 Grays Harbor County
The
American Red Cross Mount Rainier Chapter is proud to be a part of
this extraordinary network.
Last year, local Red Cross military casework volunteers donated over
6,500 hours providing local military families with emergency
communications, confidential counseling, and community referrals.
The American Red Cross provided assistance to over 4,545 local
military families residing in Pierce, Thurston, Mason, Lewis, and
Grays Harbor Counties including Fort Lewis, McChord AFB, Madigan
Army Medical Center, and Camp Murray.
The Red Cross serves as a lifeline for military families – sending
emergency communications
and messages around the world. Local military families depend on
local Red Cross volunteers
to transmit critical information regarding the death of a loved one,
a serious illness, a family emergency, or the joyous news of the
birth of a new baby.
Often times Red Cross emergency messages and verification are needed
by the military authorities in order to grant emergency leave for
service members to come home or for an overseas deferment. These
urgent messages are delivered through a worldwide network of Red
Cross staff members – both volunteers and employees.
The American Red Cross is the only agency authorized and equipped to
verify and then forward the information to the proper military
authorities. In 1905, the United States Congress designated the
American Red Cross as the only authorized organization to transmit
emergency communications for members of the Armed Forces and their
families.
The scope and reach of the services the Red Cross provides is
astounding. While serving 1.4 million active duty personnel and
their immediate family members, the Red Cross also reaches out to
more than 800,000 members of the National Guards / Reserves and
their immediate family members, who reside in nearly every community
in America. Red Cross Service to Armed Forces (SAF) staff members
are stationed at military installations worldwide and with our
troops in Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq. |
