It was a terrifying night for the Hadis family on
April 21, 2009. That evening Soria, the mother, and her children
were home alone when they suddenly heard the fire alarm.
The young daughter, Hadeel, rushed to tell her mother that there was
a fire in the bedroom. Soria tried her best to put out the fire, but
it spread too quickly. She immediately called 911 and managed
to get everyone out of the apartment to safety.
When the Red Cross disaster volunteers arrived
to help, the Hadi family was very surprised. They

had heard
about the Red Cross and knew the organization helped during large-scale
disasters,
but they never expected to have such personal contact.
While the firefighters extinguished the blaze,
several Red Cross volunteers were at the scene ready to meet the immediate
emergency needs
of each of the families displaced from their homes.
The Red Cross provided the basic necessities – temporary shelter, clothing, and
groceries for
three families impacted by the disaster. |

Abd El
Hadi, the father, was sincerely thankful for all the help his family received.
“This is amazing, amazing that people just leave everything and come out to
help. There is so much to do, to clean, and details to figure out. It is a big
relief to have the Red Cross here.” he said.
This unfortunate incident helped the Hadi family understand exactly what the Red
Cross means for victims of disasters and why it is such an amazing organization.
The disaster assistance from the Red Cross has made a huge difference in their
lives and will go a long ways to helping them heal.
